Week 2 Homework & Prep: Camera 2, Narrative and Representation of Teen

Objective: To examine a TV series for meaning (character, mood, genre), combining examples of camera and mise-en-scene.

Pass: Describe the use and purpose of mise-en-scene or camera in creating meaning and genre
Merit: Explain in relation to genre, mood and character, with examples of camera and mise-en-scene

Task 1: Close analysis of Gotham scenes - pick 3 to analyse and collect screen captures to annotate (present this on www.Prezi.com)

How does the use of camera (each element below) create meaning about the character, mood or situation?
  • Lighting (low key, naturalistic, colour filers?)
  • Depth of field (shallow focus and deep focus)
  • Blocking (intimate, foreground, background, distance)
  • Framing shots (composition and rule of 3rds)
  • Angles

Colours: What effect does the blue lighting and colour palate create?


Costume: Why are the characters in suits - how do they look slightly different and what does this tell you about them?



Props: What props are used and why are they significant?
Actors/Characters: Who are the antagonists (threat or villain) and protagonists (main character or hero)?



Make up/Apperanace: How have they been styled to appear - what is their character like?



Location: What locations is this filmed in and what atmosphere does this create?


Genre: What genre is this (how can you recognise this) and what would be the audiences expectations of the conventions?


Genre: How does the sequence create Mystery or Suspense through the use of camerawork and lighting?





Task 2: Narrative (3 Act, Linear and Non-linear)




Pass: Describe the narrative techniques in fiction moving image
Merit: Explain the narrative techniques, their purpose and effect

Linear Narrative: 3 Act Structure:
What is the equilibrium stage?



What is the disruption stage?




What is the resolution stage?









Describe and compare the 2 different types of narrative from the clips above 



Compare and explain the purpose and the effect produced by a non-linear narrative or a linear narrative

Prep Work: Task 3 
Look at the examples below from Skins. How are teenagers represented in Teen Drama



Look at the Trailer for Skins S6 - identify each of the different character-types and explain how they are being represented as stereotypes 


Screen Capture examples of the in Skins from the PPT, and comment on how they are EACH recognisable - with screen grabs from the clips below


Comment on:



  • Behaviour
  • Attitude
  • Appearance (costume, hair, make up)
  • Who is the audience for this TV Drama and how would they respond to the stereotypes offered?
  • Why do TV drama use stereotypes
