Induction Assignment Week 1

Scenario: TV Teen Drama Opening Sequence: Infection
You have been asked to handle the creation of the project, from conceiving at pre-production, all the way through to production to handling the logistics of distribution and exhibition.

You will research into examples of successful teen/high school dramas and openings, develop ideas, think about what would appeal to an audience and making sure that all areas of production have been considered and accounted for. You must use this as an opportunity to introduce yourself as a character thinking about which role you would fit into.

Once your project has been approved, you will work collaboratively to produce a short opening sequence with Titles (1-2 mins) in teams of 4

Having delivered your production to deadline, you will need to measure the success in meeting the brief by measuring viewing statistics and feedback on social networks, and from the artist and the client, showing written evaluation of your final work.

Tasks: A series of practical tasks to develop skills of shooting and editing 

  • Edit a sequence of random footage to construct a narrative – characters, location/setting, structure
  • Worksheet 1: Grid of Mise-en-scene
  • Continuity exercise, passing on a sneeze (follow the infection)
  • Worksheet 2: Camera Shots and Angles description
  • An intro showing your superpowers
  • Worksheet 3: Editing effects

Prep work: watch opening titles and trailers for Skins
What are the key features of an opening Title sequence?
What different types of characters roles teenagers play?
What types of camera shots are used?
What is the pace of the editing - are there any effects used?
