A.1 Ideas for new products
Task 1: Work to your own brief and devise an idea for a digital media product based on the following:
- ● adaptation or development of an existing product (where there is an existing audience and so further products can be built to target them)
Write your own brief: Decide which product you wish to produce and write your own brief based on your research tasks below into existing products and audiences.
Use the template provided
Topic A.2 Developing ideas for digital media products
Task 2: Develop ideas for a digital media product by researching existing media
products relevant to your own product idea.
- Find 3 existing current examples (Idents or Music Video) and create
- Task 2a) a mind map (using Popplet) of the recognisable conventions/similarities in all 3 examples
- Music Video: quick cuts, beat editing, use of close ups, lip synching, narrative or story, locations, genres of music, location, costume
- Ident: 30 seconds, branding of the channel - colours, logo, short narrative, use of stop motion animation/cut outs, costumes, locations
- Task 2b) a mood board (using Word or Photoshop) - where do you find these idents/music videos and where they can be distributed
- Which TV Channels?
- Which Youtube Channels?
- Show how you can access them on mobile phone, tablet, computers
Task 3: You must conduct product research into past (2 examples), present (the 3 you looked at above) of your chosen media product,
Present this as annotated screenshots of existing products (using Thinglink) and embed the videos in your blog
- ● Task 3a) Find 3 x Present Examples (use the ones from above):
- Show popular products through Youtube
- 1. hits,
- 2. ratings,
- 3. subscribers,
- Annotations: What are the trends/makes this popular - what is popular in making type of product/genre currently ie Lens Flares in Hip Hop videos
- ● Task 3b) Research 2 x Past Examples: find 2 previously successful examples from the past.
- Screen grab:
- 1. Views and likes, when it was broadcast or uploaded/used
- 2. Research what people have written using wiki or other websites to find well know and important examples from the last 20 years
- Annotations: Comment on the history of product, what you notice about how it has developed (animation, idents or music videos), how do these example compare, what has changed over time from past examples to now
- Topic A.4 Researching the audience or consumer
- age
- gender
- ethnicity
- region
- class
Task 4b): Collect reactions and responses to your Present examples from members of your Target Audience to find out what they like/prefer in the 2 present examples you have collected.
1. Create a Survey Monkey with 10 questions about your idea for the product to find out their preferences
Task 4c) Now develop and pitch your idea. Describe it for your audience in a Focus Group and collect responses.
Task 5: Each research task requires the following annotation on the worksheets supplied
- Task 5 a) a clear aim and a summary of the research findings
- Task 5 b) a conclusion regarding how the information shaped the development of the idea
- Task 5 c) Revisions made to the original idea need to be logged with reasons why
Assessment Criteria
- For 2A.M1 and 2A.M2:
- develop an idea for a digital media product through carrying out a series of research activities
- The chosen idea will be developed to consider the finer details, e.g. about shooting and editing decisions, costume, locations and narrative,
- Shows decisions and revisions made throughout development.
- Research activities have looked at existing products, formats and audience research, using survey monkey and focus groups.
- The research findings will be used to shape an effective idea
- For 2A.P1 and 2A.P2:
- Develop an idea through carrying out some relevant research activities but not in depth
- The chosen idea has some development in that the product is recognizable but will lack depth or detail
- Research activities have some consideration of existing products and formats, and at least one example of audience research in a focus group.
- For 2A.D1:
- 1. develop an idea through carrying out a full series of research activities.
- 2. The idea is very well defined and developed clearly with explanation of decisions and revisions.
- 3. Research includes analysis of existing products past and present examples, and effective audience research
- 4. results are reliable and methods are wide ranging, using focus groups, survey monkey and social network responses.
- 5. The research will be effective in shaping an imaginative idea
- For 1A.1 and 1A.2: learners will develop a basic idea for a digital media product through limited research activities. The learner’s chosen idea may not be stated clearly. There will be some evidence of research into at least one area. At this level, research activity will be limited and either incomplete or insufficient in scope as the number of research activities undertaken will be quite small. The connection between research findings and the development of the chosen idea is likely to be minimal.
